Sonia R. Dawkins is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Sonia Dawkins/Prism Dance Theatre. A choreographer and teacher, Ms. Dawkins is a graduate of University of the Arts and received her Master's from SUNY College Brockport. While in graduate school, Ms. Dawkins studied at the Cultural Training Center, Jamaica School of Dance, focusing on the different folk dances of Jamaica. While there she also worked and danced with the National Dance Theatre of Jamaica, and self-produced and choreographed the production event Shadow of Darkness.

Since her return to the states, Ms. Dawkins has received significant recognition for choreography and teaching. She ranked first in dance for the Thayer Fellowship New York State, and has developed her company through local and foundation grants. She has served as a guest artist at many universities, including Cornish College of the Arts and the University of Oklahoma. Among her teaching experiences are Pacific Northwest Ballet, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Evergreen City Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and others.

Ms. Dawkins' choreography has been presented on different companies: Nevada Ballet Theatre, Arc Dance, Sonia Dawkins/Prism Dance Theatre, and solos for the Youth American Grand Prix. Currently on the faculty of Pacific Northwest Ballet, she has been commissioned to choreograph for Pacific Northwest Ballet's 2006–2007 Season, and for a Company in Morelia, Mexico.

Ms. Dawkins encourages company members and guest performers to contribute cultural knowledge and artistry to the creative process.  Performances often feature live music, vocal accompaniment, and spoken text.
