Sonia Dawkins/Prism Dance Theatre was founded in 1994 in Philadelphia by Choreographer and Artistic Director, Sonia Dawkins. The company provided the perfect vehicle to allow Ms. Dawkins to realize her desire to meld modernism with multiculturalism, and skill with spontaneity. Ms. Dawkins moved her dance company to Seattle in 1999.
Ms. Dawkins presents us with a company of multi-ethnic dancers trained in classical
ballet as well as movement techniques established by some of the masters of modern dance Martha
Graham, Lester Horton, and José Limon. She then infuses the exacting beauty of these disciplines with the
texture and expressiveness of dance and music from around the world. The results are visually moving,
emotionally compelling, and wide-ranging in style and effect. Her work astonishes audiences with it's freshness, power, and depth.
Ms. Dawkins built into her non-profit organization a deep commitment to training and educating the next generation of dancers and raising funds for children at risk. Beginning in partnership with the Philadelphia public school system in 1995, and continuing in partnership with Seattle public schools, Ms. Dawkins and SD/Prism Dance Theatre dancers teach workshops for elementary and middle school children. The workshops are designed to enhance students' undersatnding of dance as bodily expression in connection with cultural diversity.
Sonia Dawkins/Prism Dance Theatre is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. |
